On the record
First GOP VA Gov of 20th century; father-in-law of Tim Kaine
Background
Abner Linwood Holton Jr. (1923–2021) was Virginia Governor 1970-74 — the first Republican Gov of VA since Reconstruction. Famously enrolled his daughter Anne in the desegregated Richmond public schools, an act of personal solidarity with court-ordered busing. Anne later married Tim Kaine (VA Gov 2006-10 + U.S. Senator 2013-). Holton's 1970 inaugural quote: "the era of defiance is behind us."
