Background
Lawrence Douglas Wilder (b. 1931) was Virginia's 66th Governor 1990-94 — the first elected African-American Governor in U.S. history (P.B.S. Pinchback served briefly as acting LA Gov 1872-73 in the Reconstruction era). Previously VA Lt Gov 1986-90 + 16 years VA State Senator. Briefly ran for 1992 presidential nomination (withdrew Jan 1992). Later Mayor of Richmond 2005-09. Wilder's grandparents were enslaved; he is a grand-nephew of poet Paul Laurence Dunbar.
