Background
Mark Odom Hatfield (1922–2011) was OR SoS 1957-59 + Governor 1959-1967 + 5-term U.S. Senator 1967-97. Pacifist Republican who voted against every defense-budget spending bill of his Senate career. Opposed Reagan's MX missile, Gulf War authorization (one of only 2 R Senators), and most U.S. military interventions. Saw the U.S.S. Arizona attack at Pearl Harbor as a Navy enlistee + visited Hiroshima in September 1945 — formative experiences.
