Walter Frederick Mondale (1928–2021) was Minnesota AG 1960-64 + U.S. Senator 1964-1976 + Vice President under Carter 1977-81 + 1984 Dem presidential nominee. Defining VP modernization: established the West Wing VP office + weekly lunch with the President — institutional changes inherited by every subsequent VP. Lost 49 of 50 states to Reagan in 1984 — the most lopsided modern defeat. Carter Amb to Japan 1993-96.
