Background

Edwin Washington Edwards (1927–2021) was Louisiana Governor across four non-consecutive terms (1972-80, 1984-88, 1992-96). Famed for political flamboyance + open corruption; survived 17 federal grand-jury investigations before finally being convicted 2000 of racketeering in connection with riverboat-casino licensing — served 8 years in federal prison. Defeated David Duke in the 1991 runoff with the bumper sticker "Vote for the Crook. It's Important." Returned to Edwards-Vitter 2014 House race in his 80s; lost.
