Pickrick Restaurant owner who chased Black customers out with axe handles July 1964; closed the restaurant rather than integrate it under the Civil Rights Act. Won the 1966 Gov race after the legislature awarded it to him (no candidate hit 50%). Switched parties to Democrat → American Independent → back to Democrat.
