Background
James Earl Carter Jr. (1924–2024) was Georgia State Senator 1963-67 and Governor 1971-75 before becoming the 39th President of the United States 1977-1981. As Gov he reorganized state government, opened state employment to Black Georgians, and hung MLK's portrait in the State Capitol. Post-presidency: founded the Carter Center (election monitoring + Guinea worm eradication); awarded 2002 Nobel Peace Prize. Longest-lived U.S. President in history; died Dec 29, 2024 at 100. Married Rosalynn Smith 1946.
