Ronald Wilson Reagan (1911–2004) was California Governor 1967-1975 before becoming the 40th President of the United States 1981-1989. Former Hollywood actor + SAG president. Switched D→R 1962. As Gov: confronted UC Berkeley Free Speech protests; signed Therapeutic Abortion Act 1967 + no-fault divorce 1969; raised state taxes to balance budget. Survived 1981 assassination attempt by John Hinckley Jr. 70 days into presidency. Wife Nancy Davis Reagan was a major political adviser.
