Maynard Jackson

Mayor of Atlanta · Democrat · Georgia

Background

Maynard Holbrook Jackson Jr. (1938–2003) was Atlanta Mayor 1974-1982 + 1990-1994 — the first African-American mayor of a major Southern city. Introduced minority-business set-asides that became national models; oversaw Hartsfield Airport's first major expansion (which now bears his name); refused to settle the 1977 sanitation strike on terms he considered unfair to workers. Grandson of educator A.D. Williams; nephew of John Wesley Dobbs ("the unofficial mayor of Black Auburn Avenue").

Curated bio from Officium's editorial pass.
